El juego como herramienta de socialización de niños y niñas con autismo

Lucía, de dos años, suele preferir estar sola en la escuela infantil. Cuando se organizan actividades (canciones, bailes o rodar una pelota en grupo), se queda al margen, sentada en un rincón mirando fijamente al suelo o un objeto propio, o se tapa los oídos y gira sobre sí misma repetidamente.

Sus maestras la animan a unirse al círculo diciendo “¡Vamos, Lucía, tienes que participar con todas!”, insistiendo hasta que consiguen convencerla; a veces incluso la toman en brazos para colocarla en medio del grupo. Pero esto aumenta la irritabilidad de la niña, provocando mayor retraimiento.

Los niños y niñas con autismo presentan un funcionamiento neurológico diverso que influye en cómo perciben el entorno, procesan la información sensorial, regulan sus emociones y se relacionan con los demás.

Esto, en la etapa infantil (entre los 0 y los 6 años) afecta a cómo conectan sus emociones con su expresión corporal, y se traduce a menudo en una mayor tendencia al juego solitario, en dificultades para compartir intereses con otras personas y en formas atípicas de mostrar afecto o malestar, como evitar la mirada, buscar los mismos objetos o recurrir a movimientos repetitivos para autorregularse.

Emoción, expresión, cuerpo y juego

En estas edades tan tempranas, es el cuerpo la principal vía de relación con el entorno, y el juego su principal vía de expresión. A través del juego se desarrolla el pensamiento, la creatividad, la autonomía y la socialización.

Una de las metodologías que utilizan el juego como principal herramienta de acompañamiento a niños y niñas con autismo es la psicomotricidad relacional. A continuación explicaremos en qué consiste y cómo se puede aplicar.

Escuchar, comprender y conectar

Las manifestaciones corporales, tanto en la dimensión motriz, como en la cognitiva y la afectivo‑social, proporcionan información valiosa sobre el desarrollo del niño, su bienestar emocional y posibles alteraciones.

En la dimensión motriz se observan, por ejemplo, la coordinación de los movimientos, el equilibrio o la presencia de torpeza y rigidez corporal; en la dimensión cognitiva, la forma en que explora el espacio, mantiene la atención en una actividad o planifica una acción; y en la dimensión afectivo‑social, gestos como acercarse o evitar el contacto, buscar el abrazo del adulto, compartir o no el juego con otros niños y niñas, así como posturas que transmiten seguridad, timidez o malestar.

Los y las docentes y cuidadoras pueden aprender mucho simplemente observando estos comportamientos: les permite identificar signos de alarma, comprender y acompañar en el desarrollo infantil desde una perspectiva integral.

La psicomotricidad relacional y autismo

La psicomotricidad relacional busca, a través del análisis de la expresividad de cada niño y niña, conectar con sus emociones, ajustando la intervención a sus vivencias corporales. Toma como punto de partida sus competencias y trata de acompañar en la manifestación y transformación de sus necesidades, ayudándole a evolucionar.

A diferencia de enfoques directivos que usan objetivos fijos y muchas palabras e indicaciones para guiar al niño, aquí el psicomotricista se acerca jugando, usa su propio cuerpo para mediar, se fija en lo que hace sin invadirle, y le ofrece opciones que le ayuden a relacionarse mejor con lo que le rodea.

Un entorno que estimule

Así, le da herramientas útiles y con sentido para que su cuerpo sirva para conectar con otros, expresarse y entender el mundo, todo partiendo de su interés y de su propia actividad.

A partir de la observación de cómo el niño usa el espacio, juega con los materiales y se relaciona con otros/as, el psicomotricista crea un entorno que estimula el deseo de comunicarse, compartir y explorar, ampliando las posibilidades de juego y expresión. Esto implica respetar su ritmo, ofrecer materiales que se ajusten a sus intereses sensoriales, participar en el juego de manera respetuosa y ayudarle a tomar conciencia de sí mismo y de las demás personas.

Cuando existe menos integración corporal

Algunos niños y niñas tienen muchas dificultades para relacionarse porque les cuesta sentir y organizar su propio cuerpo. Es decir, no logran percibir bien cómo es su cuerpo ni cómo se mueve. En el caso de niños y niñas con autismo, esto dificulta que puedan iniciar o mantener relaciones, ya que su cuerpo no acompaña su deseo de comunicarse ni les permite percibir o comprender la respuesta de la otra persona.

En estas situaciones, el psicomotricista puede ayudarles a construir una mejor conciencia de su cuerpo. Lo hace acompañándolos en la acción y proponiendo juegos que representen experiencias corporales. Estos juegos les permiten organizarse, reconocer sus límites corporales y, poco a poco, lograr momentos de encuentro con el otro que faciliten la relación y la comunicación.

Por ejemplo, en un juego de cucú–tras–tras, el psicomotricista acompaña al niño o la niña en la acción, ayudándole a anticipar lo que va a pasar y a reconocer dónde empieza su propio cuerpo y el del otro.

Aislados en sus propias fantasías

Otros niños con autismo, aunque acceden al simbolismo, pueden mostrar una fantasía desbordante que les aísla. El desafío consiste en ofrecer un espacio seguro que les permita organizar y compartir su mundo, conectándolo con la realidad social y emocional que les rodea.

Esto se puede lograr ofreciendo materiales y juegos que vinculen la imaginación con la acción concreta, acompañando sus propuestas sin imponerlas, nombrando y reflejando sus emociones, y favoreciendo interacciones graduales con otros niños y niñas para que la fantasía se conecte con experiencias compartidas.

Por ejemplo, el caso de un niño con autismo que juega solo dentro de una fantasía repetitiva del superhéroe, el psicomotricista le invita a utilizar una tela a modo de capa y, poco a poco, introduce pequeñas interacciones con otros niños y niñas, como pedir ayuda al superhéroe para rescatar a un muñeco o invitar a otro/a niño/a a participar en una misión sencilla, de modo que la fantasía se transforme en una experiencia compartida.

Comenzar por grupos pequeños

La psicomotricidad relacional no solo favorece el desarrollo individual, sino que también proporciona un espacio social rico y significativo donde se promueve la interacción, la cooperación y la empatía.

Las actividades se pueden organizar en parejas o tríos donde resulte posible para el niño con autismo desarrollar un juego compartido y la construcción conjunta de significados, adquiriendo herramientas básicas para la relación. En ocasiones, es posible la ampliación de sus relaciones, accediendo al contexto social que supone jugar en un grupo diverso más numeroso.

Se genera un entorno inclusivo, donde se acoge a la persona tal como es, reconociendo y validando sus características, capacidades y estilos expresivos propios. En definitiva, se crean contextos vivos donde cada niño y niña puede participar, convivir y sentirse parte activa del grupo, construyendo una experiencia de pertenencia, identificación, colaboración y crecimiento mutuo.

Vivir en entornos ricos en estímulos aumenta la plasticidad del cerebro

Desde hace décadas, sabemos que crecer en un entorno rico en estímulos sensoriales, sociales y físicos favorece el desarrollo cognitivo y la capacidad de aprendizaje. Aunque estos beneficios son especialmente importantes durante la infancia y la adolescencia, no se limitan a las primeras etapas de la vida. También en la vejez, un entorno estimulante contribuye a retrasar el deterioro cognitivo y a mantener la mente activa.

A pesar de esta evidencia conductual, todavía conocemos muy poco sobre los mecanismos neuronales y moleculares subyacentes. ¿Cómo convierte el cerebro la experiencia ambiental en cambios duraderos en las habilidades de aprendizaje y en la memoria?

Desde el Instituto de Neurociencias, centro mixto del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) y la Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) de Elche, hemos publicado recientemente en Nature Communications un estudio hecho en ratones que aporta nuevas claves fundamentales sobre este proceso.

En concreto, muestra que el impacto del entorno no es igual en todas las poblaciones neuronales del cerebro. Además, identifica uno de sus componentes, el complejo proteico AP-1, como un mediador central entre el ambiente y la cognición.

Tres entornos, tres cerebros distintos

Para estudiar cómo el entorno modula la cognición, nuestro equipo, liderado por el doctor Ángel Barco, crió ratones hembra jóvenes durante tres meses en tres condiciones ambientales bien definidas.

El primer grupo vivió en un entorno enriquecido. Los animales compartían grandes cajas que facilitaban la exploración e interactuaban en grupos de 15 a 20 individuos. Además, disponían de ruedas para hacer ejercicio y de juguetes que se cambiaban regularmente para mantener la novedad. Un segundo grupo vivió en un entorno estándar, en grupos pequeños de 4-5 ratones, con material básico para la nidificación como único recurso. El tercer grupo fue criado en un entorno empobrecido, caracterizado por el aislamiento social y la ausencia total de estímulos.

Tras este periodo, los animales fueron sometidos a pruebas de aprendizaje y memoria. Los ratones del entorno enriquecido mostraron un rendimiento cognitivo claramente superior. Esta mejora se observó, por ejemplo, en el test de condicionamiento del miedo, una versión en roedores del clásico condicionamiento de Pavlov.

En cambio, los ratones criados en condiciones empobrecidas presentaron dificultades de memoria. Los déficits de detectaron en pruebas de reconocimiento de objetos, que evalúan la capacidad del animal para distinguir entre un objeto previamente explorado y uno nuevo.

Desentrañar la complejidad celular del cerebro

Comprender qué ocurre a nivel molecular en el cerebro es especialmente complejo, porque hay decenas de tipos neuronales y no neuronales que conviven e interactúan. Los análisis globales tienden a mezclar señales de distintas células, dificultando la interpretación de los resultados. Para superar esta limitación, decidimos centrar nuestro estudio en dos poblaciones neuronales del hipocampo esenciales para la memoria: las neuronas piramidales y las neuronas granulares.

Por un lado, separamos cuidadosamente subregiones específicas del hipocampo mediante una disección fina. Por otro, aplicamos una técnica genética para marcar con fluorescencia las neuronas de interés. La combinación de ambos métodos nos permitió aislar las neuronas piramidales y granulares de manera muy precisa. Así, pudimos aplicar técnicas avanzadas de genómica para ver cómo se activan o apagan los genes en cada tipo de neurona.

Uno de los hallazgos más llamativos del estudio fue que los distintos entornos no actuaban de la misma manera en ambas poblaciones neuronales. El entorno enriquecido produjo cambios moleculares más pronunciados en las neuronas granulares, mientras que el entorno empobrecido afectó más a las neuronas piramidales.

AP-1 como pieza clave de la plasticidad inducida por el entorno

Además, los autores identificamos un patrón molecular que conectaba estos cambios en las neuronas con el comportamiento: las dos condiciones ambientales inducían efectos opuestos sobre el complejo proteico AP-1, encargado de regular genes claves para la plasticidad sináptica, es decir, la capacidad de las neuronas de modificar sus conexiones en respuesta a la experiencia. Mientras que el entorno enriquecido activaba AP-1, el entorno empobrecido lo reprimía. Esta correlación estrecha entre la actividad de AP-1 y el rendimiento cognitivo sugería que el complejo actúa como traductor molecular de la experiencia ambiental.

A continuación, nos propusimos comprobar si AP-1 era necesario para los cambios en la memoria inducidos por el entorno. Para ello, inactivamos el gen Fos, que codifica una subunidad esencial del complejo AP-1. Al hacerlo, los beneficios cognitivos del entorno enriquecido se atenuaron significativamente. Este experimento demostró que, sin la activación de AP-1, incluso un entorno rico en estímulos pierde gran parte de su capacidad para potenciar la cognición.

AP-1 funciona, así, como un traductor molecular clave de los efectos del entorno en el cerebro. Activa genes que modifican las sinapsis y remodelan los circuitos, procesos fundamentales para el aprendizaje y la memoria.

Convertir la experiencia en una herramienta clínica

Estos resultados refuerzan la idea de que la estimulación física, social e intelectual durante la infancia y la adolescencia es crucial para el desarrollo cognitivo. Más allá de confirmar una intuición ampliamente aceptada, este estudio identifica un mecanismo molecular concreto que conecta el entorno con la plasticidad cerebral.

Reconocer a AP-1 como un regulador central de este proceso abre la puerta a terapias que imiten o potencien los beneficios de un entorno enriquecido. Modular farmacológicamente esta vía de señalización tiene el potencial de abrir nuevas oportunidades terapéuticas en el futuro. Su aplicación podría ayudar a tratar trastornos de desarrollo del cerebro, la pérdida de memoria relacionada con la edad o situaciones con acceso limitado a entornos estimulantes.

Comprender cómo el entorno “habla” con nuestros genes es un paso esencial para para mejorar la salud del cerebro.

¿A qué llamamos evidencia científica?

En tiempos de desinformación viral y certezas instantáneas, pocas expresiones se usan con tanta autoridad y, a menudo, con tan poca precisión, como “evidencia científica”. Se invoca en debates políticos, campañas de salud pública, discusiones familiares y hasta anuncios comerciales, como si fuera un sello de verdad absoluta. Pero ¿qué significa realmente este concepto que parece tan evidente y, al mismo tiempo, tan escurridizo?

A simple vista, podríamos decir que la evidencia científica es aquello que “demuestra” algo con base en la ciencia. Sin embargo, basta examinarla para descubrir que no es un objeto estable, sino un proceso complejo, lleno de matices, incertidumbres y revisiones constantes.

Lejos de ser un bloque monolítico, la evidencia científica se construye, se cuestiona y, a veces, se contradice. Comprender su naturaleza es fundamental para navegar debates sobre temas tan diversos como vacunas, inteligencia artificial, cambio climático o nutrición.

¿Quién puede generar evidencia científica?

Existe la creencia de que la ciencia es un territorio exclusivo de profesionales en laboratorios. Pero, en esencia, la ciencia no es un título; es un método. Si una persona formula una pregunta clara, plantea una hipótesis, recoge datos con rigor, controla sesgos y expone sus conclusiones al escrutinio público, está utilizando el método científico, y por ende, está haciendo ciencia.

Lo que determina la validez de un resultado no es quién lo produce, sino cómo se generan y evalúan los datos. Aun así, la ciencia moderna se ha vuelto tan técnica que algunos experimentos requieren equipamiento, financiación o conocimientos especializados. Esta barrera es práctica, no filosófica.

¿Cuánta evidencia es suficiente? La evidencia como gradiente

Una de las ideas más importantes y más difíciles de comunicar es que no toda evidencia pesa igual. Ningún estudio aislado, por sólido que sea, puede cargar por sí solo con el peso de la verdad. La evidencia se acumula y se evalúa como un gradiente.

La jerarquía clásica de evidencia científica –ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, estudios observacionales, series de casos– es una guía útil, pero imperfecta. En la vida real, la “mejor evidencia disponible” depende de la pregunta, del contexto y de la factibilidad de los estudios.

Por ejemplo, no sería ético aleatorizar a personas a fumar o no fumar para estudiar el cáncer de pulmón; por eso, los estudios observacionales cuidadosamente diseñados se convierten en la forma más robusta de evidencia posible para ese tipo de problemas.

Además, la reproducibilidad es clave. Un resultado aislado puede ser interesante; un resultado reproducido por distintos equipos, en distintos lugares y con distintos métodos se vuelve convincente.

Cuando las evidencias se contradicen

Las contradicciones entre estudios pueden parecer desconcertantes para el público, pero son una parte esencial del progreso científico. Diferentes grupos pueden estudiar poblaciones distintas, usar métodos con niveles de precisión variables o analizar los datos con supuestos estadísticos divergentes.

En ocasiones, lo que parece contradicción es simplemente evidencia incompleta. Si cinco estudios pequeños sugieren un efecto y un gran ensayo clínico lo contradice, el peso de la evidencia recae en el estudio más riguroso, no en la suma aritmética de publicaciones.

¿Existe un protocolo único para producir evidencia científica?

Aunque solemos hablar del “método científico” como si fuera una receta única, la realidad es mucho más diversa. La biología, la física, la sociología, la medicina o la astronomía utilizan aproximaciones metodológicas distintas, adaptadas a sus objetos de estudio.

En medicina, los ensayos clínicos aleatorizados son la herramienta más robusta para evaluar intervenciones. En cambio, el estudio del clima depende de modelos matemáticos de enorme complejidad. En ciencias sociales, los métodos cualitativos (entrevistas, etnografías, análisis de discurso) generan evidencia distinta, pero complementaria a la cuantitativa.

Lo que todas estas aproximaciones comparten es la transparencia: describir qué se hizo, cómo se hizo, con qué datos, bajo qué supuestos y con qué limitaciones. La evidencia científica se legitima, en buena medida, por su capacidad de ser revisada y puesta a prueba.

La evidencia científica: provisional por diseño

Sin embargo, quizá la característica más fascinante de la evidencia científica es su carácter provisional. Una afirmación científica es fuerte no porque sea eterna, sino porque está sujeta a revisión, cuando aparezcan datos o métodos mejores. Esta flexibilidad, a veces percibida como debilidad, es, en realidad, uno de los pilares de la ciencia moderna.

Aceptar la incertidumbre no significa renunciar a la acción. Significa actuar con la mejor evidencia disponible, mientras se sigue investigando.

En salud pública, durante pandemias o ante avances tecnológicos disruptivos, la evidencia es necesariamente imperfecta y evoluciona rápidamente. Entender esto ayuda a evitar frustraciones, conspiraciones y falsas dicotomías.

La clave: evidencia como punto de partida

Por tanto, la evidencia científica no es un veredicto final, sino un proceso continuo, colectivo y perfectible. Su fuerza radica en su capacidad de autocorregirse, reconocer sus limitaciones y mejorar con el tiempo.

En un mundo saturado de datos, opiniones y pseudocertezas, comprender su naturaleza dinámica resulta esencial. La evidencia científica no cierra debates: los abre. Es, más que una respuesta, una invitación permanente a seguir preguntando.

How Jesse Jackson set the stage for Bernie Sanders and today’s progressives

Jesse Jackson’s two campaigns for president, in 1984 and 1988, were unsuccessful but historic. The civil rights activist and organizer, who died on Feb. 17, 2026, helped pave the way for Barack Obama’s election a generation later as the nation’s first – and so far only – African American president.

Jackson’s campaigns energized a multiracial coalition that not only provided support for other late-20th-century Democratic politicians, including President Bill Clinton, but helped create an organizing template – a so-called Rainbow Coalition combining Black, Latino, working-class white and young voters – that continues to resonate in progressive politics today.

Vermont, where I teach political science, did not look like fertile ground for Jackson when he first ran for president. Then, as now, Vermont was one of the most homogeneous, predominantly white states in the country. But if Jackson seemed like an awkward fit for a mostly rural, lily-white state, he nonetheless saw possibilities there.

He campaigned in Vermont twice in 1984, buoyantly declaring in Montpelier, the state capital, “If I win Vermont, the nation will never be the same again.”

He did not win Vermont, taking just 8% of the Democratic primary vote in 1984 but tripling his share to 26% in 1988. Appealing to voters in small, rural New England precincts was a remarkable achievement for a candidate identified with Chicago and civil rights campaigns in the South.

Jackson’s presidential ambitions coincided with a pivotal moment in Vermont politics: The state’s voting patterns were shifting left, with new residents arriving and changing the state’s culture and economy. In 1970, nearly 70% of Vermonters had been born there. By 1990, that figure had dropped by 10 percentage points.

The Vermont Rainbow Coalition, which was formed to support Jackson’s first campaign, organized a crucial constituency in a fluid time, establishing patterns that would persist for decades.

Setting the standard in Vermont

Jackson created a “People’s Platform” that would sound familiar to today’s progressives, calling for higher taxes on businesses, higher minimum wages and single-payer, universal health care.

In light of Jackson’s efforts, Vermont activists saw the potential for a durable statewide organization. Rather than disband the Vermont Rainbow Coalition after the 1984 primary, they kept the group going, endorsing candidates in campaigns for the legislature and statewide office in each of the next three election cycles. The coalition also endorsed Bernie Sanders’ failed bid for Congress in 1988.

Sanders served eight years as mayor of Burlington as an “independent socialist,” cultivating a core collection of local allies known as the Progressive Coalition who sought to wrest power away from establishment members of the city’s Board of Aldermen.

In 1992, the Vermont Rainbow Coalition merged with Burlington’s Progressive Coalition to form the statewide Progressive Coalition.

The Jackson-Sanders lineage

Sanders eventually went on to win election to the House as an independent in 1990, serving in the chamber until winning his Senate seat, also as an independent, in 2006. His presidential runs in 2016 and 2020 made him a prominent national figure and a leader among progressives.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who unseated a member of the House Democratic leadership in a stunning 2018 primary upset in New York, had been a Sanders campaign organizer and remains his close ally. On Jan. 1, 2026, Sanders swore in Zohran Mamdani – like Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic socialist – as mayor of New York City.

Sanders had endorsed Jackson for president in 1988. Years later, Jackson returned the favor.

Sanders paid tribute to Jackson at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. “Jesse Jackson is one of the very most significant political leaders in this country in the last 100 years,” Sanders said. “Jesse’s contribution to modern history is not just bringing us together – it is bringing us together around a progressive agenda.”

Not just Vermont

In Vermont, Jackson performed surprisingly well in unlikely places – taking nearly 20% of the 1984 primary vote in working-class Bakersfield and Belvidere, for example.

Today’s Vermont Progressive Party, which emerged out of the old Vermont Progressive Coalition, is one of the most successful third parties in the nation, winning official “major party” status in the state shortly after its official founding in 2000. The party has elected candidates to the state legislature, city councils and even a few statewide offices, including that of lieutenant governor.

Vermont was not alone in experiencing the catalyzing effect of Jackson’s presidential runs. Jackson had a significant mobilizing impact on Black voters nationwide. In Washington state, the Washington Rainbow Coalition started in Seattle and spread across the state between 1984 and 1996. New Jersey and Pennsylvania had their own successful and independent Rainbow Coalitions. In 2003, the Rainbow Coalition Party of Massachusetts joined the Green Party to become the Green Rainbow Party.

In my own research, I’ve investigated the durability of the “Jackson effect” in Vermont. There is no better test of what differentiates the Vermont Progressive Party from the state’s Democratic Party than the 2016 Democratic primary race for lieutenant governor, which pitted progressive David Zuckerman against two prominent, mainstream Democrats.

Zuckerman beat the Democrats most handily in towns that had voted the most heavily for Jesse Jackson in 1984, an effect that persisted even when controlling for population, partisanship and liberalism.

Many people would point to Sanders as the catalyst for Vermont’s continuing progressive movement. But Sanders and the progressives owe much to Jackson.

How sports betting is changing the way people watch sports

The Seattle Seahawks may have easily dispatched the New England Patriots on Super Bowl Sunday, but a more consequential battle unfolded off the field.

Sports betting companies vied with each other for fan attention, engagement and market share by flooding the broadcast with ads and promotions.

These will continue to crowd our social feeds and commercial breaks throughout the Winter Olympics. Want to wager on a curling match between Italy and Switzerland? Think someone will score in the first 10 minutes of a hockey game? In most parts of Canada, you can tap a wager into your phone from your couch in seconds.

Gamblers have already set their sights on the Olympics, but for many fans, the sudden proliferation of betting has felt disorienting. How did something once considered taboo become commonplace so quickly?

As a researcher working on a long-term project on sports gambling, I see these shifts as part of a broader transformation. Much like the forces shaping professional sport franchise sales and ownership battles, the proliferation of sports betting reflects deeper changes in the business, culture and technology of contemporary sport.

Sports betting in Canada

The sports betting floodgates opened in Canada with Parliament’s passing of Bill C-218 in 2021. This legislation allowed provinces to introduce wagering on single events, including in-game live bets. Previously, only multi-game wagers, tightly controlled by public gaming and lottery corporations through Sports Select, were legal.

Parliament was reacting to pressure from industry and consumers that had ratcheted up after the United States Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, which opened the door to legalized gambling outside of Nevada.

Today, the landscape varies across Canada. Ontario has a regulated iGaming market that allows private operators like FanDuel and DraftKings. Alberta is set to adopt a similar approach in 2026.

Other provinces maintain tighter controls, offering online gambling through provincially run platforms such as PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Québec operates its own platform through Loto-Québec’s EspaceJeux.

The COVID-19 moment

The timing of legalization also coincided with another seismic disruption: the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, COVID-19 shut down stadiums and arenas.

Professional sports leagues suddenly found themselves without ticket revenue, concessions or live event income. Games played in empty arenas upended our assumptions about the resilience of professional sport business models. As financial losses mounted, leagues and teams needed cash.

Sports betting companies, buoyed by private investment, were waiting with open arms and open wallets. Companies like FanDuel and DraftKings were eager to push further into mainstream sports markets and willing to spend heavily to do it.

Partnerships were signed in rapid succession that once would have been ethically unthinkable due to potential conflicts of interest. Leagues aligned themselves with betting platforms, franchises inked sponsorship deals and star athletes fronted ad campaigns.

This reflected a longer economic trajectory. Franchise valuations have soared over the last 25 years. The US$10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers in fall 2025 is the latest signal that global finance, private equity and non-traditional ownership groups have transformed sports into highly financialized assets.

The new stakeholders expect steady and substantial returns. With broadcast landscapes and consumer media habits changing, owners are increasingly hedging their bets. Partnerships with gambling companies are central to that diversification strategy.

Changing fandom, changing technology

Technology has fundamentally transformed how we observe, measure, track and analyze sport. Much has been written on the analytics revolution in sports management, sometimes called the “Moneyball” effect, which has seen teams increasingly apply quantitative methods borrowed from finance in their approach to franchise operations and roster construction.

Fantasy sports and video game “franchise mode” — gameplay formats that allow users to manage teams over multiple seasons — invite people to think in terms of analytics, probability and predictive modelling.

These platforms train users to break traditional “units” such as games and teams into ever smaller, quantifiable components that can be studied, compared and reconfigured. In fantasy sports, for instance, the performance of an individual athlete may matter more than the outcome of a game.

These behaviours align neatly with sports betting, and gambling apps are designed to capture and monetize them. They transform matches into a series of discrete events and outcomes that can be wagered upon, mirroring the logic of “derivatives” in the financial sector. Users are prompted to interact, analyze, predict and react to events in real time.

As TV increasingly becomes a “second screen,” betting apps keep people tethered to broadcasts through their phones, benefiting leagues, broadcasters and gambling companies alike.

Promises and perils of datafication

Modern sports generate enormous volumes of data. Tracking technologies measure ball trajectories, player movement, speed, force and spatial positioning with extraordinary granularity. Originally developed for performance analysis and officiating, this data now fuels an ever-expanding menu of betting options.

Betting platforms analyze data provided to them through league partnerships or via third-party data brokers in real time. These data operations are proprietary and not accessible to bettors.

Fans can now wager on everything from the outcome of the next pitch to the number of yards gained on a single drive or even the length of a national anthem. This real-time micro-wagering keeps fans engaged, but it also heightens the ethical stakes. As data flows expand, so do opportunities for misuse.

In recent years, several athletes and coaches have been disciplined for violating gambling rules — betting on games, sharing inside information or associating with third-party bettors.

These cases highlight larger systemic issues: that the rules governing these partnerships were assembled reactively, often hastily, and without a clear sense of how such relationships would affect competitive integrity.

The landscape is defined by uncertainty: unclear rules, inconsistent enforcement and ongoing debates about whether all of this is healthy — not just for the culture of sport, but society as a whole.

What kind of sports culture lies ahead?

The proliferation of sports betting ads signals a deeper realignment in how sports are financed, experienced and governed.

The forces driving this shift — changes in policy, economics and fan practices; technological innovation; data and financialization; emerging ethical considerations — are the same forces reshaping professional sport more broadly.

Leagues and teams are now more directly tied to gambling revenues than ever before, raising questions about their responsibility to protect players, preserve competitive integrity and support fans vulnerable to harm.

Governments and regulators, meanwhile, face mounting pressure to balance economic opportunity with meaningful consumer protections, including limits on advertising and stronger responsible gambling frameworks.

Sports betting isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Understanding how we got here, who the players are and what’s at stake are necessary steps toward ensuring a future of sport that’s about more than the next wager.

Heart-shaped locket discovery offers rare glimpse into Henry VIII and Katharine of Aragon’s marriage

Henry VIII is not remembered as a loving husband. Any English schoolchild can recount the unpleasant fates of most of his six wives with the rhyme: “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.” But though the end of his relationships are famous, less is known about Henry in love.

Now, a rare jewel discovered by an amateur detectorist and bought by the British Museum for the national collection may force us to reconsider the king’s brutal reputation.

The jewel is a heart-shaped locket, crafted in gold with red enamel decoration, and attached to a solid gold chain. On the face are the letters H and K linked together by the stems of a Tudor rose and a pomegranate, which was the symbol of Katharine’s Spanish royal family. It is a reasonable deduction that this remarkable jewel was connected directly to Henry and the first of his wives, Katherine of Aragon.

Katherine was the subject of Henry’s first and most shocking divorce, which precipitated England’s breach with the Roman papacy and the transformation of religion which we now know as the Reformation. In many ways Katherine also suffered the worst of the king’s personal cruelty. Although not executed, she was consigned to virtual house-arrest, much of the time separated from her only living child, Mary.

If this was indeed Henry and Katherine’s jewel it could be a vital clue to quite different moment in their relationship, and to a dimension of the king’s character that his otherwise notorious conduct has completely obscured.

In late medieval and Renaissance society, monograms – the linking of people’s initials – were often created to represent a personal connection, a marriage, a betrothal or even a secret love-match. Beneath the linked letters on the locket is the French word “Toujo(u)rs”, meaning “always” – a natural choice for a pledge between lovers. Here, the letters surely stand for Henry and Katherine.

The locket’s flower and fruit decoration seal the royal connection. The pomegranate symbol swept into English public life after the two families were joined through Henry’s marriage. Decorations for the coronation of the king and queen, just two weeks after the wedding, paired the Tudor rose with golden pomegranates. A woodblock print published to mark the occasion under the title A Joyful Meditation to All England, showed Henry and Katherine receiving their crowns under a twin canopy of the flower and the fruit.

Accounts of textiles commissioned for the royal household show dozens of different pieces – upholstery, wall-hangings, and livery to be worn by servants – all featuring the rose and the pomegranate prominently in their design.

Devoted designs

The decoration of the heart pendant is matched in a wide variety of treasures described in Henry’s household inventories. These contain descriptions of a bag of crimson satin, a silver comb case and standing cup all marked in the same way for the king and his queen. These lists also identify several collars or necklaces – described by the archaic term carkeynes – with heart-shaped pendants. One of these, coloured blue, is also inscribed, “H K”.

Henry spent prodigiously on beautiful, bespoke furnishings, but jewellery was his greatest passion. The inventories of his jewels and plate (gold, gilt and silver objets d’art) compiled shortly after his death in January 1547 record almost 4,000 individual pieces.

This Tudor heart pendant is a prime example of this level of investment. The locket itself is formed from 24-carat gold; the wide chain found with it is weighty and long – more than 40cm. Together they amount to 317 grams of precious metal. It is no wonder that the British Museum’s purchase price was £3.5 million.

It is clear from his wardrobe accounts – which record the purchase of decorative pieces for his household – that Henry took a personal interest in the material and design of many of these pieces. Surviving examples of designs for jewellery drawn by Hans Holbein, the German artist active at Henry’s court in the 1530s and early 1540s, may have come from a pattern book made to influence, or illustrate, the king’s developing tastes. He bought, or commissioned pieces, not only for his own household but also as gifts – often marking the new year – to family members and court favourites.

This may well be the origin of the heart pendant. Since it came to light, it has been spoken of as associated with Henry’s great pageant in the Pas-de-Calais in 1520, the so-called Field of the Cloth of Gold. Here he, Katherine and his court staged a ceremonial meeting with the French King, François I. A great many furnishings from the royal residences and chapels did cross the Channel to decorate the pop-up canvas palace and tents.

But I am convinced the message conveyed by this jewel is not political but profoundly personal. Toujours is an expression of deep, heartfelt attachment. An alternative theory, advanced by the British Museum itself, is that the pendant was made to mark the betrothal in October 1518 of Katherine’s only living child, Princess Mary, aged two, to the eight-month-old heir to the French throne.

But given the presence of pieces of very similar design in the royal household soon after the marriage and coronation, it must be possible that the pendant belongs to the early years of Henry and Katherine’s relationship. At first, she and the king were inseparable. Five months from the wedding she was pregnant. She conceived again each year from 1510 to 1513. One of these pregnancies resulted in a son, named Henry, born in January 1511. He lived for a little under two months.

In the late summer of that year, the king and queen embarked on a progress through the Thames Valley and on into the West Midlands, culminating at Warwick. It was in a Warwickshire field that the detectorist, Charlie Clarke, uncovered the heart pendant in 2019.

Could it be that a jewel gifted to Katherine at the time of the birth of Henry’s longed-for male heir was carried with the royal party – as so many of their personal jewels were – as they made their way into Warwickshire? It gives the locket an edge not just of romance, but of tragedy. Here, perhaps, Katherine was parted from a present that was, already, a memento mori of her lost son.

Using AI responsibly means knowing when not to use it

Most AI training teaches you how to get outputs. Write a better prompt. Refine your query. Generate content faster. This approach treats AI as a productivity tool and measures success by speed. It misses the point entirely.

Critical AI literacy asks different questions. Not “how do I use this?” but “should I use this at all?” Not “how do I make this faster?” but “what am I losing when I do?”

AI systems carry biases that most users never see. Researchers analysing the British Newspaper Archive in 2025 found that digitised Victorian newspapers represent less than 20% of what was actually printed. The sample skews toward overtly political publications and away from independent voices.

Anyone drawing conclusions about Victorian society from this data risks reproducing distortions baked into the archive. The same principle applies to the datasets that power today’s AI tools. We cannot interrogate what we do not see.

Literary scholars have long understood that texts help to construct, rather than simply reflect, reality. A newspaper article from 1870 is not a window onto the past but a curated representation shaped by editors, advertisers and owners.

AI outputs work the same way. They synthesise patterns from training data that reflects particular worldviews and commercial interests. The humanities teach us to ask whose voice is present and whose is absent.

Research published in the Lancet Global Health journal in 2023 demonstrates this. Researchers attempted to invert stereotypical global health imagery using AI image generation, prompting the system to create visuals of black African doctors providing care to white children.

Despite generating over 300 images, the AI proved incapable of producing this inversion. Recipients of care were always rendered black. The system had absorbed existing imagery so thoroughly that it could not imagine alternatives.

AI slop is not just articles peppered with “delve” and em dashes. Those are merely stylistic tells. The real problem is outputs that perpetuate biases without interrogation.

Consider friendship. Philosophers Micah Lott and William Hasselberger argue that AI cannot be your friend because friendship requires caring about the good of another for their own sake. An AI tool lacks an internal good. It exists to serve the user.

When companies market AI as a companion, they offer simulated empathy without the friction of human relationships. The AI cannot reject you or pursue its own interests. The relationship remains one-sided; a commercial transaction disguised as connection.

AI and professional responsibility

Educators need to distinguish when AI supports learning and when it substitutes for the cognitive work that produces understanding. Journalists need criteria for evaluating AI-generated content. Healthcare professionals need protocols for integrating AI recommendations without abdicating clinical judgment.

This is the work I pursue through Slow AI, a community exploring how to engage with AI effectively and ethically. The current trajectory of AI development assumes we will all move faster, think less and accept synthetic outputs as a default state. Critical AI literacy resists that momentum.

None of this requires rejecting technology. The Luddites (textile workers who organised against factory owners across the English Midlands in the early 19th century) who smashed weaving frames were not opposed to progress. They were skilled craftsmen defending their livelihoods against the social costs of automation.

When Lord Byron rose in the House of Lords in 1812 to deliver his maiden speech against the frame-breaking bill (which made the destruction of frames punishable by death), he argued these were not ignorant wreckers but people driven by circumstances of unparalleled distress.

The Luddites saw clearly what the machines meant: the erasure of craft and the reduction of human skill to mechanical repetition. They were not rejecting technology. They were rejecting its uncritical adoption. Critical AI literacy asks us to recover that discernment. Moving beyond “how to use” toward an understanding of “how to think”.

The stakes are not hypothetical. Decisions made with AI assistance are already shaping hiring, healthcare, education and justice. If we lack frameworks to evaluate these systems critically, we outsource judgement to algorithms whose limitations remain invisible.

Ultimately, critical AI literacy is not about mastering prompts or optimising workflows. It is about knowing when to use AI and when to leave it the hell alone.

Childhood apraxia of speech: when the brain can’t plan the words

Talking is one of the most complex actions the human body performs, yet the process of turning thoughts into speech is coordinated on millisecond timescales. For some children, the brain struggles to plan the movements needed for speech, turning everyday conversation into hard work. Even forming a single word can affect learning, friendships and confidence.

UK guidance suggests around one in ten children experience some form of speech, language or communication difficulty, including speech sound disorders. These conditions can influence educational progress, emotional wellbeing and social development. Communication underpins not only learning, but also how children express feelings and connect with others.

As a speech scientist specialising in clinical phonetics and speech acquisition, I am currently researching a less common speech motor disorder: childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This is a speech motor disorder, meaning the difficulty lies in the brain’s ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed to produce speech.

CAS is estimated to affect roughly one in 1,000 children, though figures vary. Many children improve with specialist speech and language therapy and regular practice. Without this support, speech difficulties are more likely to persist and some children may remain difficult to understand, even to close family members. Families and teachers also play an important role in reinforcing therapy and supporting everyday communication.

Understanding how speech is produced helps explain why these conditions occur and how they can be treated. Speech and language therapists receive extensive training in phonetics, the science of how speech sounds are created, transmitted and heard. Caregivers and teachers can also benefit from a basic understanding of just how complex speech production really is.

Moving parts

Producing even a single sound involves a carefully timed sequence of movements known as a speech motor plan, which the brain must assemble before the sound is spoken. For English speech, the lungs first generate a steady stream of air, usually by exhaling more slowly than during normal breathing.

As this air passes through the voice box, also called the larynx, it moves across the vocal folds. These small folds of tissue can behave in several ways. They can close tightly and release to produce a glottal stop, the brief catch in the throat heard in the middle of “uh-oh”. They can remain open so air flows through freely, creating voiceless sounds such as “s”. Or they can vibrate to produce “voicing”, the low buzzing sound you can feel in your throat when saying sounds like “z” or “b”. Each option depends on fine control of vocal fold position and tension.

After leaving the larynx, air travels either through the mouth alone or through both the mouth and nose. This pathway is controlled by the velum, the soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth. The velum lifts to block the nasal passage when air needs to stay in the mouth. When air reaches the mouth, the articulators, including the tongue, lips and teeth, shape it into recognisable speech sounds by creating narrow gaps or brief closures.

Take the first sound in the word “sat”, the /s/ sound. The tip of the tongue moves close to the roof of the mouth just behind the upper teeth, forming a narrow channel. Air rushing through this gap creates friction, producing the familiar hissing sound. At the same time, the velum lifts to stop air entering the nose and the vocal folds stay open so the sound remains voiceless.

Small changes in timing or position can create entirely different sounds. If the vocal folds vibrate, the /z/ sound in “zoo” is produced instead of /s/. If the tongue presses fully against the roof of the mouth, the sound becomes /t/, as in “two”.

Speech becomes even more complex in words and sentences, where sounds overlap and influence each other. The shape of the lips for one sound may be adjusted in advance for the next. When saying “seat”, the lips spread wide, but in “soup” they round in anticipation of the following vowel. Real-time imaging of the vocal tract during speech, including MRI and ultrasound studies, shows how intricate and rapid these adjustments are.

Therapy can help

Because speech relies on so many coordinated actions, the brain must assemble detailed movement plans and send them to the muscles with precise timing. In speech motor disorders such as CAS, this planning process is disrupted. The result is speech that may sound inconsistent, effortful and difficult to understand, with words sometimes produced differently each time, even for people who know the child well.

Therapy grounded in motor skill learning principles has been shown to help some children practise and stabilise these movement patterns. Support may also include augmentative and alternative communication, which refers to tools and strategies that help children communicate while their speech skills develop. These can range from picture boards to speech generating devices.

No single approach fits every child, but progress is possible. Specialist therapy, classroom support and tools such as augmentative and alternative communication can all help. The goal is not perfection, but participation. Being able to share ideas, ask for help and connect with others is what matters most for a child’s development.

Can psychopaths change?

Psychopaths might account for only about 1% of the general population, but
they account for a disproportionate share of violent crime.

Distinct from other conditions like sociopathy and antisocial personality disorder, psychopaths tend to show traits such as an absence of remorse or guilt, a lack of empathy and a charming and manipulative interpersonal style.

You may find it hard to imagine how someone without much empathy can change. And early psychological treatments were not successful. But advances in research are showing that a deeper understanding of psychopathy may help to create more effective interventions.

People with psychopathy typically show problems in responding to other people’s suffering, including difficulty recognising facial expressions of fear and sadness. If you have ever seen someone badly hurt themselves, then you probably had an averse response.

Your brain will have reacted to their pain and your body will probably have shown signs of physiological arousal. Your heart rate might have gone up, or you might have sweated.

These are common signs of physiological arousal in response to someone else’s suffering. But they are often lacking in psychopaths.

When my colleagues and I asked people in prison with a history of violence to view pictures of others’ emotional facial expressions, those who reported more of the characteristic features of psychopathy also showed blunted physiological arousal. Our 2019 study found that the pupil (the small black hole in the centre of the eye that lets in light but also increases in size during physiological arousal) did not change much in size among people higher in psychopathic traits when they looked at pictures of people who were afraid.

These differences mean that some people with these traits might struggle to learn about how their actions cause other people to feel distressed or afraid.

Prisons and secure forensic hospitals are where people with psychopathic traits are often entered into treatment programmes designed to reduce their risk of reoffending. Modest reductions in general reoffending have been reported following cognitive behavioural programmes that are offered to people in prison with or without psychopathy or another personality disorder.

But not all criminal behaviour programs have been marked by success. For
example, in the UK in 2017 the failure of the Core Sexual Offender Treatment Programme designed by His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and approved for use in 1992, to lower reoffending was highly publicised.

HMPPS has since introduced a new programme, Building Choices. It adopts a strengths-based, skill focused approach to improve emotion management, healthy relationships and sense of purpose. Unlike the previous course, the programme is not designed to address particular offence types, and it has shown some signs of promise.

Historically, researchers have considered such programmes less effective at reducing reoffending when offered to people with psychopathy. Indeed, some studies even suggest that people with psychopathy worsened following treatment.

One of these programmes, offered from around 1965 to 1978 at the maximum-security Oak Ridge Division of the Mental Health Centre in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada, made use of a so called “total encounter capsule.”

These results made for a high degree of pessimism among scientists and practitioners alike. But that pessimism might be misplaced.

It is perhaps unsurprising that the “total encounter capsule” did not prove effective. The capsule was “a tiny self-contained chamber where sustenance was supplied through tubes in the walls and from which no group members would leave during sessions that lasted up to two weeks”.

Participants were reported to be nude and did not participate voluntarily. There were few professional therapists, and the use of force and humiliation was permitted.

Historically, there has been a lot of pessimism around treatment for other personality disorders, too.

This is in part a reflection of stigma attached to these disorders. But it is also because personality difficulties can make it harder for people to build relationships, including with the people responsible for their treatment.

Yet a form of therapy known as dialectical behaviour therapy has shown success in reducing self-harm in people with borderline personality disorder. This type of therapy is designed to help people cope with intense emotions and to learn interpersonal skills.

In another recent study, mentalisation-based treatment, which targets the person’s ability to understand and regulate the negative effects of thoughts and feelings, led to reductions in aggressive behaviour in people with antisocial personality disorder. Findings like these suggest tailored interventions are more effective when it comes to personality disorders.

Capable of empathy?

One important consideration when treating psychopaths is that they are often assumed to be incapable of empathy. But this assumption has been challenged by some intriguing studies, which suggests that they might instead lack the motivation for empathy.

In a 2013 brain scanning study, a group of scientists at the university of Groningen, the Netherlands, showed that although criminal psychopaths did not automatically feel empathy for other people’s pain depicted in videos, their brains did generate an empathic response similar to that of non-psychopaths when instructed to feel what the people in the videos were feeling.

It could be an important step toward helping people with psychopathy if they could better understand how their actions can hurt other people.

Perhaps the most promising work that suggests people with psychopathy can
change has been conducted with young people. Although children and young people under the age of 18 cannot be diagnosed as psychopathic, features of psychopathy referred to as callous unemotional traits can be reliably assessed in children as young as two years of age.

A 2018 study adapted parenting interventions to be more effective for this high-risk group of children, aged three to six years old. Afterwards, the children showed significant reductions in behavioural problems, callous unemotional traits and aggression. The researchers coached parents to show more warmth, sensitivity and responsiveness. Parents were also asked to focus on reward-based rather than punishment-based strategies to encourage the child participants to be more responsive to distress in others.

A 2022 study also reported positive outcomes, showing improvements in behaviour and personal relationships in adolescents after an intervention with a focus on strength-based (helping children understand what they’re good at) rather than punishment-based parenting strategies.

So recent work is offering a glimpse of a more optimistic future for reducing aggressive and antisocial behaviour associated with psychopathy. Perhaps the question is not can psychopaths change now, but can we get better at helping them to change.

Can a psychedelic-induced mystical experience really improve your mental health?

Mystics once spent years meditating in caves in search of transcendence. Today, a growing number of people believe something similar can be reached in a single afternoon with the help of a psychedelic drug. Swallow a capsule of psilocybin or take a carefully supervised dose of LSD and you may encounter what many describe as one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

Modern clinical trials appear to support this. Several studies suggest that the intensity of a “mystical-type experience” during a psychedelic session predicts the degree of improvement in depression, anxiety or addiction. A recent review, for example, reports a consistent statistical link between mystical experiences and improved mental health.

It is an enticing idea: that healing comes through a profound encounter with unity, sacredness or ultimate reality. But do we really need mystical experiences to get better?

To understand why this question matters, it helps to step back. Long before psychedelics entered psychiatry, philosophers and theologians were fascinated by mystical states. In the early 20th century, the psychologist William James argued in his book The Varieties of Religious Experience that mystical states should be judged “by their fruits, not by their roots” – meaning by their effects on people’s lives rather than by debates about their metaphysical truth.

Others, including the British writer on Christian mysticism Evelyn Underhill and the philosopher of religion Walter Stace, developed what later became known as “perennial philosophy”: the idea that a common core experience lies at the heart of the world’s religions.

This way of thinking has quietly shaped modern psychedelic science. In 1962, the psychiatrist Walter Pahnke conducted the Good Friday Experiment, giving theology students psilocybin in a church. Many reported experiences that were strikingly similar to those described by classical mystics.

Around the same time, British-born psychiatrist Humphry Osmond – who coined the word “psychedelic” – developed treatment approaches designed to induce powerful “peak experiences” that could trigger lasting psychological change.

Today, large clinical trials at universities such as Johns Hopkins and Imperial College London have revived this approach. Researchers routinely measure whether participants have had a “mystical-type experience” using a standardised questionnaire known as the mystical experience questionnaire, or MEQ.

Participants are asked to rate statements such as “I had an experience of unity with ultimate reality” or “I had an experience which cannot be described adequately in words”. The higher the score, the more likely someone is classified as having had a full mystical experience.

But this raises a conundrum. If an experience is supposedly “ineffable” – beyond words – how accurately can it be captured by ticking boxes on a survey?

Some critics argue that the MEQ builds in assumptions drawn from perennial philosophy. By asking about “ultimate reality” or “sacredness”, it may reflect a particular interpretation of mystical experience rather than a neutral description. As one analysis notes, there is a risk that the scale partly reproduces the very theory it aims to test.

Expectations may further complicate matters

Many participants in psychedelic trials arrive already primed for transcendence. They have read glowing media coverage, listened to podcasts or watched documentaries promising life-changing breakthroughs. Research shows that such expectations can significantly shape subjective drug experiences.

My colleagues and I saw just how powerful suggestion can be in a study nicknamed “tripping with the god helmet”. Participants wore a sham brain-stimulation device that we described as capable of activating their “mystical lobes”. In reality, no stimulation was delivered. Yet nearly half reported mystical-type experiences, some describing them as deeply meaningful.

In another experiment, placebo psychedelics administered in a carefully staged environment – complete with evocative music and imagery – produced strikingly similar reports. These findings suggest that context and expectation are not minor side notes. They can play a central role in shaping what people experience.

None of this means psychedelic therapy is “just a placebo”. The drugs clearly alter brain activity and experience in powerful ways. But it does raise the possibility that mystical experiences are not the sole or even primary driver of therapeutic change.

After all, correlation does not equal causation. A large body of psychiatric research warns against assuming that because two things occur together, one must cause the other. Mystical experiences may simply be one visible marker of other processes, such as increased emotional openness, the development of new neural connections or changes in entrenched beliefs.

Super placebos

Some researchers have even described psychedelics as super placebos: substances that amplify expectancy effects rather than bypass them. That may sound dismissive, but it points to something important. Expectations, beliefs and meaning-making are not incidental to healing; they are often central to it.

When used carefully in structured settings, psychedelics may act less like magic bullets and more like catalysts. They intensify whatever psychological processes are already underway.

For some, that may include feelings of unity and transcendence. For others, it may involve confronting grief, fear or long-buried memories. Stanislav Grof, a pioneer of psychedelic therapy, once compared these substances to microscopes for the mind – tools that reveal otherwise hidden aspects of experience.

The key point is this: while mystical experiences often go hand in hand with improvement, they may not be essential. And on their own, they may not be enough to create lasting change.

Lasting therapeutic benefits appear to emerge from a web of interacting factors: brain changes, emotional breakthroughs, supportive settings, skilled therapists and the integration work that follows the session. Focusing too narrowly on whether someone scored above a mystical threshold risks oversimplifying a complex process.

The psychedelic renaissance has opened exciting possibilities for mental health treatment. But if the field is to mature, it may need to move beyond the assumption that transcendence is the secret ingredient.

The future of psychedelic therapy may depend less on chasing mystical peaks and more on understanding the conditions that help people translate intense experiences – mystical or otherwise – into durable, meaningful change.
